I purchased a Asus X-54 C laptop (with free DOS) from Chennai in 2012, it
worked fine for almost a year and half then gone kaput… I had left it alone for
the all this time (untill Jan 2015) then suddendly one day I thought why not
try to resurrect it … like the mythical phoenix… so I asked one of my cousins
to have a look at it.. he got back to me
saying the hard disk is gone , he arranged a second hand 250 Gb hard disk and
returned the laptop to me in working condition…then came my problem .. I wanted
to connect my laptop to my BSNL broadband (ADSL…well it means somewhat high
speed internet over existing copper phone lines..) but my cousin had installed
a trial versin of windows 7 and when I tried to connect the laptop to the modem
by means of a ethernet cable .. I was dissapointed to watch it not being
detected.. wheen I probed further to see the reason for that I was in for a rude
shock… the version of windows didn’t had
any device drivers (specialised software) that would detect …ethernet or usb
devices..so I decided to rummage through my old CD collection of chip &
digit magazines and try find a bootable linux distro, I could only locate an
ubuntu 10.10 live dvd so I took of to my
nearest railway station which had a book stall selling assorted
magazines but I couldn’t fin them and after frantic searching for my old
favorites on google I finally had another diassapointment ,both magazines I suspect are now discontinued in India, atleast digit survives as an online
technology portal) .
Anyway I installed ubuntu (which was installed only in the third attempt
as in the previous attempts I tried to select the keyboard layout during
installation and the installation was smooth only when I let the default
installation procedure without any of tinkering on my part.)
Now fresh from the victory, I had in hand, I connected the ethernet cable but
alas … the modem or connection was not detected….as I was in no mood to give up
.. so ,I poked around and found usb cable which came along with the modem…and
using it my laptop detected the connection and I was able access the modem
settings upon entering “192.168.1.1” … I used screenshot software available in
ubuntu to take screenshot grabs from my laptop, this I transferred to my
desktop for editing in word using my HTC explorer A310e connected via a mini
usb cable..rest of the camera shots taken by my HTC explorer. Next week I will
try to connect my laptop to wi-fi router (Siemens SL2 141 )at my wife's place…
